Botox was FDA-approved for chronic migraine prophylaxis in 2010 and became a standard of care for patients with chronic migraine. Botox helps us reduce the overall number of migraine and overall headaches that you may experience. Botox treatment for chronic migraine consists of multiple, very shallow injections administered across the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and shoulders. Botox treatment takes only a few minutes and typically needs to be repeated every 3 months or simply 4 times per year. Botox treatment is very effective and may produce results within weeks after the first treatment. This treatment should be done by a trained specialist and follow specific and approved injection protocol, and if done accurately, it is remarkably effective and well-tolerated. Another great point about Botox therapy is that it does not have drug interactions and, if administered correctly, does not affect your liver, heart, or kidney function and will not cause weight gain or cause fatigue.

BOTOX AND SPG BLOCKS

Botox has several other FDA-approved indications, including cervical dystonia – a condition that causes painful muscle spasms in the neck associated with neck twisting, bending, or extending.  This procedure is performed using either an ultrasound (our preferred method) or EMG guidance and takes only a few minutes to complete, and may need to be repeated every 3 months as well. Most patients experience neck pain relief and muscle relaxation within weeks after the first treatment.

Dr. Alexander Feoktistov has over 15 years of experience with Botox, and he specializes in that treatment modality.

Sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPG block) is another procedure in which we are specialized. This procedure is typically used to treat idiopathic facial pain (atypical facial pain) but may also be beneficial in patients with intractable migraine and cluster headaches. There are different ways this procedure could be performed, and we prefer to use the least invasive and essentially painless intranasal approach using a specific device. This procedure takes only a minute to perform. It is essentially painless and may produce results within minutes. Depending on the circumstances, this procedure may be repeated in a few days or weeks as needed.

We offer our in-person and telemedicine services to all patients in the greater Chicago area and throughout the state of Illinois as well as to patients from all 50 states and those who live abroad!
